Welcome on board – Useful information for your trip
Starting your trip
Check in with the first airline you are flying with on your trip. You’ll usually then receive your digital boarding pass that also covers your connecting flight with the partner airline.
Our advice: use the airline apps to check in and stay up to date.
Travel classes
United Polaris? United Premium PlusSM? United sometimes uses special names for its travel classes. You will, of course, travel in the travel class that you booked – even if United refer to it by a different name.
Now take a look at all the comforts you can look forward to.
Onboard services
United has an extensive range of food and drinks on board its domestic and international flights.
On board many aircraft you can also look forward to a comprehensive and up-to-date range of in-flight entertainment with international blockbusters, wi-fi and other services to ensure you have a pleasant journey.
What you need to remember
Check your travel documents
Complete and valid travel documents are essential. All the travel documents you require such as passports and visas are checked from the moment you enter the USA. Find out about the entry requirements for your destination in good time.
Time for check-in and baggage check
With United the check-in and baggage drop-off times may vary depending on the location. These also apply outside the USA. However, you can usually check in between 24 hours and 90 minutes before departure.
Please check the relevant check-in and boarding times beforehand.
Your baggage if you have an indirect flight
Many destinations in the USA require a stopover. You must first collect your checked bags on arrival at your first point of entry at the transfer airport before you check it in again for your connecting flight after border control.
Please also check the United baggage regulations.
The United Airlines and Austrian apps
Planning your trip, mobile check-in and useful services on your day of travel – the United and Austrian apps are your perfect travel companion and will keep you informed about your flight at all times. Would you rather have one app than two? Then we recommend you use the app of the first airline you are flying with on your trip.
Frequently asked questions about travelling with Austrian and United Airlines
If you are using the United app for your United flight, this is where you’ll find information about your connecting flight at the earliest possible time. Simply take a look in the app after your arrival at the transfer airport and make sure that your device has an internet connection.
With Austrian flights you receive reliable information about your connecting flight with Austrian in the Austrian App.
Alternatively, please check the departure display screens at the airport. These can often be found directly adjacent to your arrival gate.
The terminals used by airlines for arrivals and departures can vary depending on the airport and whether it is an international or domestic flight. We therefore recommend you always check the website of your departure and/or transfer airport beforehand to see which terminals are used by the airlines you are flying with on your trip.
If you have any questions or need support before you travel, please first contact the airline with which you booked your flight. If you booked your flight via austrian.com for example, that is Austrian.
Please note: it is always advisable to contact the airline operating your flight directly to add or request special services on your flight (such as special meals, special baggage or taking your pet etc.).
In the event of flight delays or cancellations, you will be automatically rebooked by United and Austrian and notified via the contact details you provided (e.g. by email).
If you miss your connecting flight due to a delay, you will usually be automatically rebooked by the airline that caused the delay and also notified accordingly. If you have not received any notifications or require any further support, you can contact our service team at the airport at any time.
If you wish to request an upgrade for your flight with United, please note the following advice about upgrades on Star Alliance partner airlines:
- Please note that you can only obtain an upgrade via miles or eVouchers if your flight booking was made on a United flight number. Upgrades cannot be booked on codeshare flights (Austrian flight numbers).
- For technical reasons, it is currently not possible to book upgrades on United flights online via milesandmore.com. However, you can request an upgrade by telephone via your local Miles & More Service Team. Please have your Miles & More service card number and Miles & More PIN ready to hand to do so.
- An upgrade booking can then be confirmed providing there is availability in the intended booking class for flight awards in the next higher travel class (Premium Economy or Business Class).
