Carry-on baggage
Find out which items are permitted in your carry-on baggage, how large and heavy your carry-on baggage may be and how many items you can take with you. Following these rules will allow you to board smoothly and enjoy more comfort inside the aircraft.
Carry-on baggage by travel class
You can take one or two items of carry-on baggage on board depending on the travel class booked.
The carry-on baggage allowance for HON Circle Members, Senators, Frequent Flyers and passengers with Star Alliance Gold or Silver status depends on the travel class concerned.
1 Carry-on baggage may also be restricted to one item for our Business Class passengers in exceptional cases, depending on the aircraft type and/or safety requirements of the national authorities.

Carry-on baggage
The weight and size of your carry-on baggage are checked at the airport and it may have to be checked in if it exceeds the permitted weight and size. You will incur additional charges if you exceed your free baggage allowance. Please note that these charges are higher than with the regular check-in.
Alternatively, you can also carry a folding garment bag measuring 57 x 54 x 15 cm instead of carry-on baggage.
Please note that on some flights your carry-on baggage must be stowed in the cargo hold due to the aircraft type.
Personal items
In addition to your item of carry-on baggage, you may also take one additional personal item into the cabin with you with a maximum size of 40 x 30 x 10 cm. This might be a handbag, a travel pouch or a laptop bag, for example.
We recommend storing your personal documents, medication and valuables here in case your carry-on baggage has to be carried in the cargo hold.
Carrycots / Child seats
For children under two years, you may also bring with you a carrycot, an approved child seat or a completely foldable travel pram with a maximum weight of 10 kg.
You can take so-called "pocket buggies" with you on board as part of your carry-on baggage allowance.
How to stow your carry-on baggage correctly
Stow your carry-on baggage in the compartment above you to ensure a comfortable trip and more space in the cabin. You can place personal items under the seat in front of you. There is a garment hook for your jacket on the seat in front of you. Please note that baggage storage above the emergency exit row seats is reserved for the passengers sitting there, because it cannot be stowed under the seat in front for security reasons.
Permitted liquids on board
100 millilitre containers
You may carry liquids in your carry-on baggage in containers with a capacity of up to 100 millilitres and packed in a transparent, reusable one litre plastic bag (e.g. "zip bag").
- Please note that this rule applies to the maximum filling quantity printed and not the actual contents.
- You may only take one plastic bag per person.
- Liquids include pastes, lotions, mixtures of liquids and solids, as well as the contents of pressure containers, such as toothpaste, hair gel, drinks, soups, syrup, perfume, shaving foam and other items with a similar consistency, as well as sprays, aerosols and gels.
Medication and special foods
Medication and special foods (e.g. baby food) required during the flight may be taken outside the plastic bag, but must be presented at the security control.
Duty-free items
Duty-free items must be kept in the sealed safety bag provided at the point of sale.
All other liquids must be stowed in your checked baggage, otherwise they will be removed from you at the security control at the airport.
For more information, see the Document on liquids in carry-on baggage (PDF, 350 kB).
Notes for travellers to the USA and South Africa
The above rules also apply to flights to the USA. If you have a connecting flight to the USA, however, you must also note that only transparent, translucent or tinted containers are permitted in the standard security bags. Metal containers or opaque containers must be placed in your checked baggage as it is not technically possible to screen liquids in such containers at the airport security control in the USA. Please also note the list of prohibited and dangerous goods.
Specific carry-on baggage regulations apply to flights departing from and within South Africa. In Economy Class you may carry a bag (max. 56 x 36 x 23 cm, weight max. 7 kg) and a slim laptop bag. In Business Class you may take two bags (max. 56 x 36 x 23 cm, weight max. 7 kg) and a slim laptop bag.
