Flying to Nice: tips and information for your trip

Nice is the capital of the French Départments Alpes-Maritimes and is one of the most famous tourism destination on the Côte d'Azur. Starting in the 1850s, even before Nice was part of France, the city was the destination of choice for rich aristocrats from all over Europe as a winter getaway, including Queen Victoria and the Russian Czar. But they were not the first who appreciated the mild climate and the location between the Alps and the Mediterranean. Greek settlers and Roman invaders were here 2000 years earlier. From the Greek period the city still has its name, they called it after Nike, their Goddess of victory. The conquering Romans renamed the town Cemenelum, the name lives on in the Cimiez district of Nice. Here you can visit a Roman arena still in use today and the ruins of a gigantic Roman bathhouse.

Today Nice looks like a museum in architectural history. If you take a stroll through the charming Old Town you will find a lot baroque, classicism, belle époque and art déco buildings next to contemporary architecture. The famous artist Henri Matisse left many of his works and his own private collection on display in the Musée Matisse. Enjoy the local cuisine and try socca, a pancake made of chickpeas flour, or the salade niçoise. Make a daytrip to famous neighboring cities like Monaco, Cannes and St. Tropez and have a great time just relaxing on the beach!
