The Hofburg Palace in the city and the Schönbrunn Palace outside the city were their centres of power, from here Emperors and Empresses ruled and conquered. In the Treasury of the Hofburg you will encounter the hoard of the Habsburgs, including the Imperial Crown of the Holy Roman Empire from 962 and the Holy Lance. From their times as rulers of Spain you can still experience the famous equestrian performances in the Spanish Riding School, also located in the Hofburg. Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schubert and Johann Strauß are the reason why Vienna is nicknamed as the “City of Music”. You can visit their graves in Vienna’s Central Cemetery, a great example of the ubiquitous Vienna Art Nouveau architecture. In the bizarre Museum of the cemetery, you can see the original invitation to Beethoven’s funeral, but also a sit-up-coffin and a streetcar for the dead.
