Reduce your CO₂ with innovative, sustainable aviation fuel
Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) are the first real alternative to fossil fuels. They are based on biomass like used cooking fats& oils. On a lifecycle basis, SAF reduces around 80% of CO₂ emissions compared to conventional kerosene. From 2022, Austrian Airlines had been refueling with the first regionally produced sustainable aviation fuels at Vienna Airport. With the use of SAF, your flight-related CO₂ emissions can be reduced by up to 80%.
Carbon offsetting through high-quality climate protection projects
The Lufthansa Group promotes climate protection projects worldwide in collaboration with the providers myclimate, Climate Partners, SQUAKE and climate Austria. Climate protection projects include the restoration of peatlands in Germany, the use of energy-saving cookers in African countries or technical solutions such as the storage of CO2 in concrete or pyrolitically produced fertilizer, so-called biochar. All projects ensure that, over the long term, either CO2 emissions are reduced or removed from the atmosphere. Environmental projects outside of Europe are certified to the highest international standards: Gold Standard or Plan Vivo. Furthermore, the effects and quality of local, European environmental projects are ensured by the domestic standards, such as MoorFutures, or the CH VER guidelines.

The combination of reducing and offsetting CO₂
By combining these two measures, one part of your contribution goes towards our climate protection projects, while the other goes towards the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in our aircraft. This efficient mix makes it easy for you to fly more sustainably.
Environmental cost surcharge
The environmental cost surcharge covers part of the constantly rising additional costs arising from statutory environmental requirements such as the European Union's SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) blending regulation (‘ReFuelEU Aviation’), adjustments to the European ETS (‘Emission Trading System’) programme and other national and international laws.
