Information about free baggage
Your free baggage allowance covers bags that you can check in at no additional cost. The size, weight and number of permitted free baggage items are based on the fare you booked, the route and your frequent flyer status. You can also find information about your free baggage allowance on your ticket or passenger receipt.
Permitted dimensions and weight
A single bag is permitted to have
- maximum dimensions of 158 cm (height + width + length)
- and weigh a maximum of 23 kg – or 32 kg in Business Class.
Larger, heavier or additional bags are carried as excess baggage. This applies to all scheduled flights operated by Austrian Airlines. Please note that different rules apply to Austrian Holidays holiday flights.
Baggage calculator for scheduled flights*
The amount of your baggage allowance on scheduled flights* and the costs for additional bags depend on the route and the travel class or fare booked. Use our calculator to check how much baggage you can take on scheduled flights* and how to book additional bags.
* You can recognise a scheduled flight by its three-digit flight number, for example OS561 from Vienna to Zurich.
You can take with you one suitable child seat, baby basket, foldable pushchair (1), foldable bicycle trailer or handcart or one baby carrier backpack per child as additional hand luggage free of charge. They will be labelled accordingly during check-in and carried in the cargo hold.
At most airports you can keep a completely foldable pram or pushchair weighing less than 10 kg with you until shortly before boarding. It will be returned to you immediately after landing. Please refer to our tips on travel preparations for families for more detailed information about taking completely foldable travel prams and pushchairs.
Exceptions specific to the market may result in a higher free baggage allowance in Economy Class. These exceptions are stated on your ticket or passenger receipt.
If you have booked a journey with several airlines, the baggage rules that apply are those of the airline that flies the most significant leg of the journey (usually the geographically longest leg) and under whose flight number this leg was booked. It is irrelevant which airline actually operates the flight.
Different free baggage regulations may apply to Austrian holiday flights (charters).
If you combine an Austrian Airlines flight with other airlines as part of your whole trip, your free baggage allowance may be determined by the rules of the airline with which you will fly the longest or most significant route. Please note therefore the free baggage allowance entered on your ticket or passenger receipt. A weight scheme might also be used where your free baggage is shown as a total weight irrespective of the number of bags, for example 20K (for 20 kg) or 30K (for 30 kg).
Under the regulations of the CTA (Canadian Transport Agency) and US DOT (United States Department of Transportation), if your trip begins or ends in the USA or Canada, your baggage regulations are determined by the first airline stated on your ticket.
