Realm of the Centaurs

Located in the northern Aegean Sea, the port city of Kavala is like a modern amphitheatre built between the crystal-clear sea and the mountains. Here you will find everything that delights the senses: old spice-scented markets, an imposing fortress, hip cafés and quaint tavernas, classical buildings, churches, mosques, and plenty of Greek hospitality. An idyllic town with the character of a picturesque fishing village and unspoilt sandy beaches. By the way: Kavala was once the "Mecca of tobacco", the famous Tobacco Museum bears witness to this.

Castles of sand and stone

Kalamata offers many assets: Along the 2.5 kilometres of its main beach there is enough space for sprawling sandcastles, the old town features Byzantine sacred buildings and a stately 13th-century castle towers above it all. Around 30 kilometres to the north is the town of Messini, one of the most interesting archaeological sites in Greece. Popular with young and old is the railway museum, an amusement park that gives off the aura of a long-gone era. If you love olives, you will find the famous Kalamata olives on the trees that surround the city - or on your plate, if you wish.
